It may, but sewer backup, flooding and escape of water are not always treated under the same part of the policy.
How can sewage enter a home?
- A private drain can block.
- A sewer can become overloaded during heavy rain.
- Low-level toilets or drains can be the first points where water returns.
Keeping sewage out and valuables above it
- Keep fats and wipes out of drains.
- Deal with repeated slow drainage.
- Keep valuable possessions off basement floors.
- Ask a drainage specialist whether a non-return valve is suitable if backups have happened before.
Read the flood and drainage definitions
Read the definitions of flood, escape of water and underground services. Do not assume that every form of water entering the home is covered in the same way.
