Often not when the lintel has gradually deteriorated or was badly installed. Sudden accidental damage is a different matter.
What does a failed lintel look like?
- Stepped cracking above a door or window.
- Brickwork dropping slightly over the opening.
- Movement appearing after window replacement.
Protecting the support above doors and windows
- Do not remove structural support during window replacement.
- Investigate cracks above openings instead of repeatedly filling them.
- Use proper structural support when making a new wide opening.
The reason the lintel failed is the key
The insurer will look at why the lintel failed. Gradual corrosion, poor workmanship and defective construction are often excluded.
