It can if the ceiling comes down because of an insured event, such as a sudden water leak. An old ceiling that fails through gradual deterioration is different.
Why do ceilings collapse?
- Water from a leak weakens the ceiling.
- Old plaster loses its fixing.
- Heavy loft storage overloads the structure.
- Someone walks on unsupported ceiling areas in the loft.
If the ceiling starts to sag
- Keep people away from the area.
- Find and stop any water leak.
- Remove unnecessary weight above it if that can be done safely.
- Have a large loose area assessed.
The reason for the collapse decides the cover
The cause of the collapse decides whether insurance applies. Check escape-of-water and accidental-damage cover where relevant.
