For major structural work, yes. Extensions, loft conversions and large renovations can change the risk enough that the insurer needs to know before work starts.
What work is most likely to matter?
- Removing structural walls.
- Opening up the roof.
- Building an extension.
- Major rewiring or plumbing.
- Work that leaves the home partly unoccupied.
Before the builders start
- Tell the insurer what is planned.
- Check the contractor's insurance.
- Ask whether ordinary home cover will remain in force.
- Find out whether specialist renovation cover is needed.
Major work can fall outside ordinary home cover
Major building work creates risks that are not present in ordinary occupation. Some insurers restrict cover while the property is being structurally altered.
